Is your child interested in Korean culture? Is your family planning a trip to Korea? In this 12 week class, we will begin to learn how to read and write the Korean alphabet (Hangul). Then we will practice it as we put it together we speaking, reading, and vocabulary. This class is Level one in a series of 6 levels.

This class doesn’t require any background knowledge of Korean. The teacher will provide plenty of practice material to use outside of class time.

What can I expect to learn?

This class is part 1 of our 6 part series “Korean Kids Club.” For the first 6 weeks, we’ll focus on the basic 24 letters of the Korean alphabet as well as the advanced characters that are extensions of the basics (5 double consonants, 11 compound vowels or diphthongs). From week 7, we’ll begin to read, write, pronounce, and practice and use together in daily activities and situations.

After finishing all 6 levels, most students will be prepared for further study in Korean and the beginning levels of the Test of Proficiency in Korean (TOPIK) test.

Korean with Yonghi was great! She made learning fun and used a lot of materials from our interests like K-pop to keep us engaged. I highly recommend her course!

about the instructor

Hello, 안녕하세요? I am Yonghi (or Julie). I was born and raised in Seoul, Korea and have been a language instructor for over 20 years. I am proud that I have a very standard Korean accent and even worked as a radio reporter for 2 years. I have a BA in English Language, an MA in Korean Literature and Creative Writing, TESOL certification, and Korean School Teacher Certification. I taught mostly English in Korea, but when I came to America about 25 years ago, I began teaching more Korean language. Especially after finishing my master’s degree in Korean Literature and Creative Writing, I realized teaching Korean is a more meaningful mission for me. So, I completed multiple levels of Korean School Teacher Certification programs from The Overseas Koreans Foundation.

I previously taught students from pre-school to graduate school at a local Korean school, lectured in University of Texas El Paso’s STARTALK program, a federal grant foreign language program funded by NSA for Korean language, and instructured high school foreign language credit courses at online schools. I also frequently do freelance translation/interpretation work remotely or in person and private tutoring for all ages.

My goal for my language class is that students can learn Korean as if they’re in Korea. I also focus on topics that students are interested in and develop my lesson plans based on students’ needs and interests, and I introduce culture and history throughout the course.  I am fully aware of students’ busy schedules and work hard to make the most of our time. I treat all my students as I do my own 3 children and am flexible, patient, and professional.

In my spare time, I love watching movies, singing with my piano or guitar, writing short stories, volunteering at various places, and traveling with my family.

I am looking forward to sharing my enthusiasm for the Korean language with you and helping you speak fluently. Most importantly, I hope  that you can enjoy and have fun in the process of learning this beautiful language. Hope to see you in my class!
