Meet our Mandarin Teachers:

Kristin

Kristin has a BA in Linguistics with Minors in Chinese and Teaching English as a Second Language from University of Florida and a Masters in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages from Middlebury Institute of International Studies with a specialization in Teaching Chinese as a Foreign Language. She also completed the International Chinese Language program at National Taiwan University.

She has experience teaching both English as a Second Language and Chinese as a Second Language. As a Mandarin Chinese teacher, she worked as a Chinese Language Teaching Assistant at Middlebury Institude of International Studies and taught at local Chinese schools in California to help Chinese Heritage students improve, maintain, and grasp the language. She also worked with the Directorate General in Monterey, CA teaching diplomats and students preparing for cross-cultural experiences.

As an English teacher, Kristin taught in Taiwan through the prestigious U.S. Fulbright Scholar Program. There she worked in both Taipei and Kaohsiung as an English teacher, tutor, and teaching assistant. She taught both young learners and adults. She served as a private tutor for professionals including those working in the industrial engineering field. She also participated in leading volunteer English reading programs for children through the American Institute of Taiwan’s American Corner throughout the local community. She later had the opportunity to work in Beijing as a Consulting English Teacher for a Summer Language and Culture Exchange Program. Most recently, in 2018, she spent the summer teaching English to students at the university level in Tokyo, Japan.

Kristin also speaks conversational Cantonese Chinese and some Spanish. Her experience overseas and here in the U.S. give her a great understanding of both American culture and Chinese cultures and enhance her skills as a teacher of both Chinese and English.

Ge

Ge is a native speaker of Mandarin and Cantonese. She has a Bachelors in Economics from Guangdong Business University and a Masters of Social Work from the University of Georgia.

She worked as a service manager in California for 7 years while also teaching Chinese classes for adults for a local community organization. In 2005, she co-founded The Council of Overseas Chinese Services, a non-profit that aims to help overseas Chinese better integrate into all aspects of American society. It helps build understanding of education, healthcare, law, technology, and services within Chinese-American communities. The organization also works to promote understanding of Chinese culture among Americans in order to bridge communities.

Ge has also worked teaching private Chinese lessons for several American families moving to China for work purposes.

Ge gives back to the communities around her both on her own and through her organization. A few examples include mobilizing people post-Harvey services and providing training for other emergency scenarios.

She has received training in emergency intervention, legal advocacy, community service, medical interpretation, and homelessness prevention. Ge speaks Mandarin, Cantonese, and English fluently. She also has experience with Japanese, Russian, and Spanish. She was also  trained in American Sign Language and Chinese Sign Language.

Ge is passionate about teaching Chinese language and culture. She tries to include much more than just language in her lessons. Her experience in healthcare, business, social work, and education help her meet every client’s diverse needs and connect with them where they are.

Kristin was such a wonderful tutor. I can’t say enough good things about her. She took me from 0 to topically conversant in just a few weeks – a result far beyond my wildest expectations. She was knowledgeable, flexible with my complicated work schedule, and dynamic in her ability to integrate and shape language acquisition around topics and situations I was likely to encounter. The handling of scheduling and payment was transparent and seamless.
