“My Korean Lesson” Program

Program Objective

The “My Korean Lesson” program is divided into 4 classes of 12 weeks each. (Level 1A, 1B, 2A, and 2B). Separate classes will be offered for adults aged 18+ and teens ages 13-18.

This program is designed to help students develop communicative skills in Korean. Additionally, it will prepare students for further study in Korean (such as the TOPIK test). The goal is to equip students to function in Korean culture, to use language in meaningful contexts for personal enjoyment, enrichment, and potential future travel, and to understand the role of Korean culture in a global context.

Expected Learning Outcomes

During these lessons, students are expected to:

  1. Hear Korean spoken by a native speaker to gain phonemic awareness
  2. Practice listening, speaking, reading, and writing in Korean
  3. Develop the ability to communicate and express oneself in Korean
  4. Gain awareness of common culture, customs, traditions, and viewpoints
  5. Build a sense of responsibility over their own learning process and progress

For Level 1 (1A and 1B)

Students are introduced to the basic vocabulary, grammar, and expressions relevant to real-life situations by engaging in a variety of activities that focus on developing listening, reading, speaking, and writing skills in Korean.

The instructor will follow the textbook “My Korean 1” as a guide for this class. The content of the class is also directed by student interest and inquiry as topics naturally occur. A physical textbook may be purchased, but a digital version will be provided. The class is not completely dependent on the text and instruction may include videos, websites, movies, or TV shows, and other organizers. The instructor will check often for understanding, repeating directions, and providing modeling for students.

After completing Korean 1A and 1B, most students will be prepared for the early levels of the Test of Proficiency in Korean (TOPIK) exam.

For Level 2 (2A and 2B)

These classes involve the continued development of vocabulary, grammar, and expressions relevant to real-life situations building upon much of what was learned in Korean 1A and 1B. Continued emphasis on oral high-level communication skills is stressed through constant conversation. The goal is for students to speak Korean during their class at least 60% of the time. There will be more concentration on ability to carry out conversations in Korean.

The instructor will follow the textbook “My Korean 2” as a guide for this class. Similar to Level 1, a physical textbook may be purchased if desired, but a digital version of any material will be provided. The class will also be driven in part by the interests and goals of participating students.
