Materials Needed: All material will be provided. No textbook is required.
The class will mostly rely on Speed-Up Chinese Elementary 2 (速通汉语初级2) and HSK 2.
Recommended supplementary materials (not required): Integrated Chinese 4th Edition, Volume 1 (Simplified Chinese) and Colloquial Chinese: The Complete Course for Beginners. (Note: Purchase of these books is optional. Learning materials, exercises, and weekly PPTs will be shared via Google Drive.)
What can I expect to learn?
By the end of this course, you should be comfortable with talking about time, making invitations, borrowing items, exchanging social media information, discussing prices and negotiating when shopping, asking for clarification, talking about your weekend, describing past events, introducing your hobbies, sharing experiences, and using polite language when visiting someone’s home.
This level is appropriate for:
- Students who have completed our Mandarin 101 class
OR - Students who have mastered approximately 150-200 Chinese words and possess basic grammatical knowledge

about the instructor
Charlotte Zhu is a native Mandarin speaker and teaches standard Mainland Mandarin. She holds a BA in Teaching Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages from Shaanxi Normal University and an MS in Education and Curriculum Studies from Purdue University. She has also passed China’s national Putonghua Proficiency Test.
Charlotte has been teaching Mandarin as a second language since 2018 and has worked with learners of all ages and levels. Her teaching experience includes private tutoring and group classes in HSK preparation, AP Chinese, conversational Mandarin, and business Chinese, as well as lessons for young children and diplomatic clients.
She has contributed to projects on intercultural communication and helped author a handbook for international Mandarin learners. In 2018, she received the “Most Popular Chinese Language Teacher” award at Shaanxi Normal University.
Charlotte enjoys creating clear, engaging lessons and supporting every student in building confidence with Mandarin.
