Meet our Mandarin Teachers:

Charlotte

Charlotte Zhu is a native Mandarin speaker and teaches standard Mainland Mandarin. She holds a BA in Teaching Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages from Shaanxi Normal University and an MS in Education and Curriculum Studies from Purdue University. She has also passed China’s national Putonghua Proficiency Test.

Charlotte has been teaching Mandarin as a second language since 2018 and has worked with learners of all ages and levels. Her teaching experience includes private tutoring and group classes in HSK preparation, AP Chinese, conversational Mandarin, and business Chinese, as well as lessons for young children and diplomatic clients.

She has contributed to projects on intercultural communication and helped author a handbook for international Mandarin learners. In 2018, she received the “Most Popular Chinese Language Teacher” award at Shaanxi Normal University.

Charlotte enjoys creating clear, engaging lessons and supporting every student in building confidence with Mandarin.

Zoey

Zoey is a native speaker of Mandarin Chinese and teaches standard mainland Mandarin. Additionally, she speaks Sichuan dialect, which she can teach upon request. Zoey holds a BA in Education and English Language and Literature and an MS in data science. She also holds a certification as an English/Mandarin interpreter.

Zoey worked as an English teacher in China and transitioned to teaching Mandarin around 2016. She has worked as a private tutor for DC area families and diplomatic clients since 2016. She taught formal classes for family members of students of the Washington Yuying Charter School for several years before working as the main Mandarin Chinese teacher for Pre-K through 8th grade at Prince William Academy in Virginia. Currently, Zoey does translation and interpreting work as well as teaching private Mandarin lessons.

Zoey is passionate about helping students come to love the Mandarin language. Her lessons are student-centered and student-driven, with students guiding the direction of learning as much as possible. She tries to include games, culture, and activities in order to make her lessons engaging. When appropriate, she even includes songs, crafts, and more!
